Rely on TECO® FireBag® Fire Safety Valves (FSVs) to Protect Lfe, Property and First Responders
Section 217 of the proposed Pipeline Safety Act Senate Bill (S.2975), directs the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to evaluate thermal-activated Fire Safety Shutoffs on gas meter sets.
Studies show when gas regulators are exposed to fire, regulators can fail within 3 minutes. Gas regulator failure can rapidly escalate structure fires to gas-fed Class B fires.
FireBag® Thermal activated Fire Safety Valves shut off gas when exposed to fire.
When natural gas regulators fail during a fire, the incident is effectively treated as a gas-fed Class B fire. Class B fires introduce additional hazards, liability concerns, and safety challenges for occupants, first responders, and the surrounding community.
Research and fire data indicate that natural gas flames can reach temperatures around 3,000–3,500 °F (1,650–1,925 °C), with high-pressure fuel delivery from the service line accelerating the fire’s intensity. In contrast, a typical Class A fire fueled by wood in a residential structure burns at approximately 1,100–1,500 °F (593–815 °C), without any pressurized fuel supply. The elevated temperature and sustained fuel flow persist until the gas line is shut off. Studies also indicate that standard firefighter turnout gear may lose up to 50% of its protective effectiveness under these conditions, significantly increasing risk to emergency responders.
Utilities that implement thermally activated Fire Shutoff Valves (FSVs) critically reduce risk and potential liability by protecting homes, occupants, and first responders when fire incidents occur. These valves act as a critical safeguard, shutting off gas supply automatically and limiting the severity and spread of fires.
